Ms. Bebe Cherian: Director and Supervisor of Special Education
Ms. Cherian began her career at The Phoenix Center in Nutley, NJ. During her twenty years there, she held various positions including that of School Social Worker, Board Certified Behavior Analyst and Supervisor of Behavioral and Mental Health Services. During that time she also served as the Program Coordinator for Appropriate Living for the Autistic in Waldwick, NJ. In 2009, Ms. Cherian joined the Cresskill Public Schools as Home Program Consultant. In 2015, Ms. Cherian left The Phoenix Center to take a position as School Social Worker and District Behaviorist for Allendale Public Schools. Ms. Cherian, who prefers to be called, “Bebe” comes to ILA after spending a year at Celebrate the Children in Denville, NJ.
Bebe graduated from Dominican College with her Bachelors of Science in Social Work. She returned to her alma mater to teach as an Adjunct Instructor in Social Sciences for fourteen years. Bebe went on to receive her Masters of Science in Social Work from Columbia University in New York and she completed post graduate Applied Behavior Analysis training at Penn State University. She is currently completing her Doctorate in K-12 Educational Leadership at Seton Hall University.
Juanita A. Petty, RSBA, SFO: Business Manager
Ms. Petty began her career as a secretary to the Business Administrator at the Hackettstown Board of Education in 1990. She decided to complete her own degree, and in 1995 she graduated from Thomas Edison State College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, Accounting. She went on to complete her Masters in Business Administration from Montclair State University. Since then she has spent over twenty years as a school business administrator, first in Boonton and then Wayne Township. Ms. Petty joined ILA as our Business Manager in 2016. Ms. Petty remains very active in public school business administration, having served as an interim BA in Paterson, Netcong, and Lafayette Township, and Lincoln Park.
Mr. Ernie Byrne: Program Coordinator
Ernie Byrne has been working in Special Education since 1991. He has a background in Exercise Science and before ILA he was a Physical Education Instructor. As the Program Coordinator, Ernie has several roles at ILA. He is responsible for field trip planning and finalizing, supervision of students during extra curricular activities, volunteer activities with Butler Library and Visiting Nurse Association of Morris County, and Student Work Program. He also manages student transportation and is responsible for communicating with bus companies, parents, drivers, and county offices regarding all issues pertaining to the transport ILA students.
Ernie can also be found in the classrooms as an Instructional Assistant helping out the students and staff of ILA in any capacity that is needed. Ernie is always busy with work, but can be found enjoying running, snowboarding, and his most relaxing activity, mowing his lawn. He has completed several marathons, which is an example of his greatest attribute, his perseverance. He tries to instill that in all of the students of ILA.
ILA does not have office space at our campuses in Butler or Stanhope. Instead, we maintain an office in Butler within quick driving distance of our campuses. This office is used predominantly for administration, storage, and staff meetings. Intakes and certain individual parent meetings also take place there.
